Monastery
The Monastery is a dormitory for Observatory visiting scientists
and for staff who spend much of their time there.
It is situated at the end of a peninsula with sharp drop-offs
on three sides.
The building is in the shape of an inverted ``J''.
Its long wing has 14 rooms, and is split into
two parts: the ``day'' side consisting of six rooms (for visitors
working at the solar towers who sleep at night and work during the day),
and the ``night'' side, the remaining eight rooms (for
visitors using the night-time telescopes and who sleep during the day).
The short wing parallel to the dormitory wing houses the cook's
quarters and the dining room. In the wing joining the two is
a combination library/living area.
The original Monastery was destroyed by fire in 1907 and rebuilt.
South of the Monastery building are the remains of the foundation
of a solar telescope built by the Smithsonian Observatory.
The Tour continues back up the ridge to just beyond the
60 Inch telescope at the site of the
50-Foot Michelson Interferometer.
