Using the tools of solar seismology, a field created at Mount Wilson, astronomers study wave-like motions of the Sun's visible surface which convey information about the hidden solar interior. This project, operated at this telescope by USC, is part of the High Degree Helioseismology Network.
Behind the 60-foot Tower is the oldest telescope still on the mountain, the Snow solar telescope. Other telescopes preceeded it: however, they are no longer extant.
